Remembering the Healers & Wise Women

As many people dress up like a witch for Halloween or honor the dead at this time of year, I wish to honor the memory and lives of those healers and everyday wise women (and some men) who were accused or silenced.

So many lives taken unnaturally and too soon.

As part of my family’s hearth school (9th grade) discussions about history, we’ve learned about witch hunts across Europe and in the United States. I’ve given this more attention by reading the following books. Some are pure fiction with wisdom woven throughout the stories and some are more historically or spiritually based. Do you have any favorite books on this topic that you’d recommend? Please share below in the comments for this post. Thank You!

The first 3 listed on the top row would be appropriate for middle school age and up. The fourth one is considered young adult. The others in the second row are all more adult content whether fiction or non-fiction. I listened to The Witch of Blackbird Pond as an audiobook and it was well done. It is also probably the best choice for traditional Christian families.

You can find more great reads on my virtual bookshelf, including some about myths, magic, or witches that I did not repeat in this post. I also have a discussion guide available for Begone the Raggedy Witches.

May we instead drown or burn any fears and use our own powers in ways that nurture to thrive in harmony.

If you are an avid reader, lifelong learner, and curious creative like me, you might enjoy the new Studio Stories that I’m hosting. The first one is a fun exploration through playful painting and artistic styles inspired by the book If Picasso Painted a Snowman. I share several art projects & videos inspired by the book. It would be a great one to do with kids as well. The next one is inspired by the letters of Vincent Van Gogh and his family. I’d love to have you join me.

The tribute card featured above is from my Heart of Life deck. The feathers were inspired by an owl on our homestead. The writing in the original painting says:

may your spirit fly free

Wise Wishes,

Jules
